How to Add an Extra Layer of Comfort Around the Fire

Add an Extra Layer of Comfort Around the Fire

What could be more inviting than a roaring fire?

The sheer presence of a fireplace in any home, holiday house, restaurant or hotel instantly evokes visions of lively gatherings, deep fire-side chats and snug evenings — even before a log’s lit.

The styling around these mesmerising centrepieces brings these vivid moments to life with enticing soft furnishings, rugs and accessories.

Yet, the ultimate fireside comfort is one you can’t see.

The comfort of knowing furnishings are protected with a fire-retardant.

Fire retardants, such as Fire Defender, protect furnishings, people and premises from fire. They also ensure that fabrics meet the New Zealand Building Compliance standard, especially important for commercial properties, rentals, AirBNBs and theatres.

How does it work?
Fire Defender is applied as a liquid solution that dries to form a protective layer. This barrier absorbs heat and releases water vapour, reducing flammability to help to stop the fire in its tracks. While also reducing smoke density.

See how these two rooms dramatically compare, one protected with Fire Defender, and one without, in this short video.

What’s it used for?
Fire Defender can be professionally applied by the Premium Surface Protection Team, to any absorbent textiles including, curtains, lounges, rugs, carpets, cushions, blankets and throws, as well as books and timber. Once dry, the solution ensures the protected items are less likely to ignite, reducing the risk of fire damage while slowing down the spread of the fire.

Where is it used?
Fire retardants aren’t just applied to textiles around fireplaces and fire pits. They can be used anywhere to reduce the risk of fire-related accidents in venues, including schools, theatres & museums, hospitals, clinics & aged care homes, government & commercial office buildings, hotels & convention centres, holiday homes & Airbnbs, residential homes, boats and planes.

Extra Comfort – Fire Defender is:

  • Made from eco-friendly and non-toxic ingredients
  • Sealed in and can’t be removed by everyday cleaning
  • Colourless and odourless once dry

So, next time you’re planning to curl up by the fire, add the kind of comfort that transcends a cashmere throw and contact Premium Surface Protection about fire-protecting your furnishings.

Keeping Up Appearances at The Hotel Britomart

Keeping Up Appearances at The Hotel Britomart

What makes every hotel guest feel like the first?

The Hotel Britomart sits at the centre of a nine-block precinct bustling with the city’s finest dining and shopping on Auckland’s downtown waterfront.

Sustainably designed by Cheshire Architects’ talented Creative Director, Emily Priest, along with the extensive team at Cheshire, including Principals Nat Cheshire and Dajiang Tai, it was the first hotel to be awarded 5 Green Star Design and Build ratings from the NZ Green Building Council.

Every element from the ground up was chosen to meet the criterion, from the hotel’s facade of 150,000 bricks handmade from local clay in Melbourne to cork-soled hotel slippers that can be composted at their end-of-life.

Now, well into its second year of welcoming guests, how does The Hotel Britomart upkeep its interiors sustainably?

Timeless Furnishings
The Cheshire Architects team and much sought-after Seattle-based siblings Suzie and David Lucas, from Lucas Interiors (designers of The Landing Suites within The Hotel Britomart), thoughtfully sourced materials and bespoke furnishings to fulfil each room’s sustainable story.

All furnishings were chosen for their sustainable qualities and timeless aesthetic, which eliminates the need for it to be replaced in a few years for feeling outdated, therefore, reducing landfill and the consumption of resources required to make new ones.

Eco-friendly Fibre Protection
Cleanliness is the single most important requirement for any hotel guest. Fabric protection is an obvious and essential way to provide this, especially in a space designed for use 24/7.

To do this sustainably, Cheshire Architects engaged Premium Surface Protection (PSP), aligned by their choice of extremely effective and environmentally safe and non-toxic products, MicroSeal, Fiber Protector and Fire Defender.

These products were applied as appropriate, to rugs supplied by The Ivy House and nodi, plus many of the drapes, lounges and cushions, to provide a protective barrier that prevents dust, dirt and liquid from penetrating fibres. As a result, the furnishings protected by PSP are easier to clean and maintain, ensuring every hotel guest feels like the first.

The Hotel Britomart’s careful consideration of furnishings and use of eco-friendly fibre protectors and fire defenders play a crucial role in reducing their environmental impact, ensuring they continue to lead the way in sustainable hotels.

In fact, fibre-protecting furnishings should be part of every interior’s sustainable story… ultimately one that ends in compost, just like The Hotel Britomart’s cork-soled slippers.

Every hotel guest feels like the first with fibre-protected furnishings.

FlockHill Homestead is a testament to the hard work and creativity of an incredible team of experts, including architect Jonathan Coote, of the Auckland-based firm Warren and Mahoney, interior designer Jessica Close, and featuring luxury furnishing brands Monmouth Glass, Nodi Rugs, B&B Italia and Treology. The team worked collaboratively to create a space that combines stunning innovative design with practicality, all while focussing on New Zealand made sustainable materials and products.

With authenticity, integrity and comfort governing the interior design direction for FlockHill Homestead, we are proud to be a part of the team that helped shape this standout property with the use of our Premium Surface Protection products. With our premium fibre protection at the forefront to keep the luxurious rugs and furniture looking fresh and new for years to come, it would be remiss not to mention the sustainability aspect chosen by this team to protect these items and not contribute to fast design. Additionally, our fire retardant products were used to provide safety and peace of mind in case of an emergency. The use of these products demonstrates Flockhill’s commitment to not only creating a beautiful and functional space but also to ensuring longevity, beauty and safety of furnishings.

The homestead’s sustainability is evident in its design, which incorporates a range of eco-friendly features. The architecture firm, Warren and Mahoney, designed the homestead with passive solar principles in mind, allowing natural light to penetrate the space while reducing energy consumption. The homestead also features locally sourced building materials and was designed to be used in a fluid way, with almost continuous connection between internal and external spaces, creating the sense of being fully immersed in the landscape ‘a true luxury escape in every sense of the phrase’.

The luxury furniture brands used throughout the homestead are also worth noting. Grey Lynn Community Hall Protection for Chairs

Maintaining furniture at the busy Grey Lynn Community Hall

Community centres are home to many events and groups – so furniture needs some pre-use TLC!

Not every job we work on is as opulent as a luxury villa or concept department store. Practical community venues require our help too. And seeing our fabric care services ensure these spaces present well and can fulfil their purpose day after day, is just as satisfying.

That’s why this month’s Furnishings in Focus is on the Grey Lynn Community Centre.

This hub hosts exhibitions, dance classes, ballet, playgroups, yoga programs, farmers markets and church services.

It’s home to a bustling community 7 days a week, so the furnishings within are in great need of protection to ensure longevity and vibrancy.

We worked after hours to protect 200 chairs that are in constant use. This means that spilled coffee, sticky finger marks, ingrained food and pen ink to name a few culprits, won’t leave their mark. After our fibre protection, spot cleaning will be an easy job and the chairs will remain clean for a long time to come.

Sustainable Design at the Heart of Omana Luxury Villa

Sustainable Design at the Heart of Omana Luxury Villa

When owners Cobus and Silmara Scholtz set foot on Waiheke Island, their initial dream was to build a retreat for themselves.

Yet, when they realised the land’s true potential, their vision quickly transformed into the development of four luxury villas; Villa Serenity, Villa Haven, Villa Surrender and Villa Joy, built in harmony with the breathtaking landscape.

Omana Luxury Villas NZ_1200_600

Everyone involved in the project was hand-picked for their renowned quality and passion for working in harmony with nature. This ethos was ingrained in every aspect of the build, from the design, right down to protecting the furnishings with environmentally safe and non-toxic products.

Highly regarded New Zealand architect Pete Bossley was behind the design. His work exceeded the highest sustainability standards, using only environmentally certified materials, bought locally where possible.

The project also included the restoration of the surrounding Omana forest. Exotics, weeds and pests were cleared and a native planting program was developed to create a thriving environment for wildlife—one which has already brought the tuis back.

The same level of environmental consideration was also required for the interior.

With a flair for interior design, co-founder Silmara Scholtz selected bespoke pieces for each of the four luxury villas.

It was essential to protect each piece including rugs, chairs, headboards, daybeds and drapery from spills, mould, sun damage and of course wear and tear—especially in an environment where staying in is as much a part of the experience as venturing out.

Premium Surface Protection was chosen to treat all the chairs, rugs, daybeds, headboards and drapery, with MicroSeal and Fiber Protector, recommended for their effectiveness and environmentally safe, non-toxic properties.

Together, every decision the founders’ made illustrates their commitment to sustainability and ensures Omana Luxury Villa will continue to provide incredible experiences for its guests for a very long time to come.
