Southern Rail UK Trial Fabric & Carpet Protection

Southern Rail UK Trial Fabric & Carpet Protection

Can a fibre protection product extend the cleanliness and lifespan of public transport fabric seats and carpet? We all know public transport fabric seats and carpet can become stained and dirty very quickly, so will a fibre protection product keep customers satisfied while using the public train system?

Southern Rail faced challenges with their seats and carpets becoming stained and dirty, leading to dissatisfied passengers and escalating cleaning expenses to maintain the expected level of vehicle presentation. The cleanliness of seats and carpets plays a pivotal role in passenger satisfaction, making it a top priority for train operators. However, achieving and preserving a spotless appearance demands considerable time and cost investment.

Unipart Rail enthusiastically endorsed the Fiber ProTector textile protection system as a solution to minimise daily deep cleaning efforts and the related expenses. Multiple trials were conducted, and the cleaning staff received comprehensive training. One of the trials took place at the Southern Selhurst Depot in South London, where Fiber ProTector was expertly applied using a pressure sprayer, ensuring thorough coverage of the seats and carpets in their passenger transport vehicles.

The positive outcomes of these trials paved the way for more efficient and cost-effective maintenance practices.

The process was straight forward and fairly quick with the application to a full carriage only taking approximately 20 minutes.

With Fibre ProTector, spills and stains can be swiftly eliminated from the fabric, preventing permanent staining. This efficient stain resistance makes cleaning quicker and easier, requiring only a damp microfiber cloth and a speedy vacuuming process. As a result, labour time and the need for cleaning products are significantly reduced, leading to a remarkable extension in the lifespan of the fibers and maintaining the fabrics and carpets’ vibrant, “new-like” appearance.

The life of Fiber ProTector for this Southern Rail application is long lasting and will only require to be reapplied every 2-3 years.

Southern Rail are extremely pleased with the performance of the Fiber ProTector product and are implementing the application of Fiber ProTector across their entire fleet.

The following are the outstanding results from the application:

75% reduction in the amount of chemicals used

75% quicker cleaning of vehicles during turnaround operations

50% reduction in deep cleaning time

Improved efficiency of the cleaning teams

   Improved life of the fabrics

Improved passenger satisfaction due to the quality of cleanliness in the vehicles

The most effective way to clean up spilled Coffee & Wine

Life’s little accidents don’t need to become major disasters.

Sound and feel familiar?

We all know that sinking feeling as you scramble for the closest cloth or paper to get to the liquid before it sinks into the fabric or rug……but it doesn’t have to be that way!

Accidents will happen. At some stage someone will bump someone else holding a coffee, the rich red wine splashes while being poured or the orange juice slurps out of the glass onto your favourite cushion.

So protecting your soft furnishings and rugs and carpets provides peace of mind. It allows you not to have to focus on what people are doing, but focus on them being a part of the activities.

When that is taken care of, the clean up is much easier and incredibly effective.

So now your textiles have been treated by Premium Surface Protection Textile Treatments, follow these simple guidelines when dealing with liquid and other spills.

Firstly, look for manufacturer’s textile specific cleaning instructions as some fibre compositions can be permanently damaged by using incorrect methods and even collapse with the addition of water. Otherwise,  BLOT – DILUTE – BLOT

Use water to clean up water-based spills (eg tea) and most other beverages; these need nothing more than water. Simply blot as much of the spill as possible and then dilute with just a little bit of water and then blot again. Never over wet or saturate the contaminated textile!

What does BLOT mean?

Use absorbent paper towel, or ideally the PSP SuperSoaker Absorbent Chamois Sponge, applying pressure until all liquid has been absorbed. Ensure to continue to change the absorbent paper for clean paper while applying pressure, or wring out the Chamois as needed.
For fatty/oil spills (eg ice-cream or gravy) use WonderSpot which contains a mild PH to break down the spill, and then continue to blot with absorbent paper or Chamois.

Lightly re-wet the spill and follow the instructions above under the heading BLOT – NEVER RUB OR SCRUB

Remove as much of the solids as possible by vacuum or blunt spoon or knife, then treat as above, either as a WET SPILL or DRIED LIQUID SPILL.
Some light or delicate textiles may need professional attention in either a wet extraction, very low moisture cleaning or dry cleaning if there are any marks still showing.

What sort of stains can I protect my fabric sofa from?

Accidents naturally will happen.

The coffee splash, the red wine spill, the smudged in chocolate from little fingers, or a drop of oil from your favourite cheese….. but all these can be simply cleaned up if you have protected your fabric sofa before they happen.

Depending on the spill, you may only need an absorbent paper or chamois because the spill will bead on top of the fibres.

If the spill does sink into the fibres, use the absorbent paper or chamois, and then a spot cleaner like Wonderspot to raise the contaminants to the surface and then blot away.
