How to Add an Extra Layer of Comfort Around the Fire

Add an Extra Layer of Comfort Around the Fire

What could be more inviting than a roaring fire?

The sheer presence of a fireplace in any home, holiday house, restaurant or hotel instantly evokes visions of lively gatherings, deep fire-side chats and snug evenings — even before a log’s lit.

The styling around these mesmerising centrepieces brings these vivid moments to life with enticing soft furnishings, rugs and accessories.

Yet, the ultimate fireside comfort is one you can’t see.

The comfort of knowing furnishings are protected with a fire-retardant.

Fire retardants, such as Fire Defender, protect furnishings, people and premises from fire. They also ensure that fabrics meet the New Zealand Building Compliance standard, especially important for commercial properties, rentals, AirBNBs and theatres.

How does it work?
Fire Defender is applied as a liquid solution that dries to form a protective layer. This barrier absorbs heat and releases water vapour, reducing flammability to help to stop the fire in its tracks. While also reducing smoke density.

See how these two rooms dramatically compare, one protected with Fire Defender, and one without, in this short video.

What’s it used for?
Fire Defender can be professionally applied by the Premium Surface Protection Team, to any absorbent textiles including, curtains, lounges, rugs, carpets, cushions, blankets and throws, as well as books and timber. Once dry, the solution ensures the protected items are less likely to ignite, reducing the risk of fire damage while slowing down the spread of the fire.

Where is it used?
Fire retardants aren’t just applied to textiles around fireplaces and fire pits. They can be used anywhere to reduce the risk of fire-related accidents in venues, including schools, theatres & museums, hospitals, clinics & aged care homes, government & commercial office buildings, hotels & convention centres, holiday homes & Airbnbs, residential homes, boats and planes.

Extra Comfort – Fire Defender is:

  • Made from eco-friendly and non-toxic ingredients
  • Sealed in and can’t be removed by everyday cleaning
  • Colourless and odourless once dry

So, next time you’re planning to curl up by the fire, add the kind of comfort that transcends a cashmere throw and contact Premium Surface Protection about fire-protecting your furnishings.

Keeping Up Appearances at The Hotel Britomart

Keeping Up Appearances at The Hotel Britomart

What makes every hotel guest feel like the first?

The Hotel Britomart sits at the centre of a nine-block precinct bustling with the city’s finest dining and shopping on Auckland’s downtown waterfront.

Sustainably designed by Cheshire Architects’ talented Creative Director, Emily Priest, along with the extensive team at Cheshire, including Principals Nat Cheshire and Dajiang Tai, it was the first hotel to be awarded 5 Green Star Design and Build ratings from the NZ Green Building Council.

Every element from the ground up was chosen to meet the criterion, from the hotel’s facade of 150,000 bricks handmade from local clay in Melbourne to cork-soled hotel slippers that can be composted at their end-of-life.

Now, well into its second year of welcoming guests, how does The Hotel Britomart upkeep its interiors sustainably?

Timeless Furnishings
The Cheshire Architects team and much sought-after Seattle-based siblings Suzie and David Lucas, from Lucas Interiors (designers of The Landing Suites within The Hotel Britomart), thoughtfully sourced materials and bespoke furnishings to fulfil each room’s sustainable story.

All furnishings were chosen for their sustainable qualities and timeless aesthetic, which eliminates the need for it to be replaced in a few years for feeling outdated, therefore, reducing landfill and the consumption of resources required to make new ones.

Eco-friendly Fibre Protection
Cleanliness is the single most important requirement for any hotel guest. Fabric protection is an obvious and essential way to provide this, especially in a space designed for use 24/7.

To do this sustainably, Cheshire Architects engaged Premium Surface Protection (PSP), aligned by their choice of extremely effective and environmentally safe and non-toxic products, MicroSeal, Fiber Protector and Fire Defender.

These products were applied as appropriate, to rugs supplied by The Ivy House and nodi, plus many of the drapes, lounges and cushions, to provide a protective barrier that prevents dust, dirt and liquid from penetrating fibres. As a result, the furnishings protected by PSP are easier to clean and maintain, ensuring every hotel guest feels like the first.

The Hotel Britomart’s careful consideration of furnishings and use of eco-friendly fibre protectors and fire defenders play a crucial role in reducing their environmental impact, ensuring they continue to lead the way in sustainable hotels.

In fact, fibre-protecting furnishings should be part of every interior’s sustainable story… ultimately one that ends in compost, just like The Hotel Britomart’s cork-soled slippers.

Every hotel guest feels like the first with fibre-protected furnishings.

Sustainable Design at the Heart of Omana Luxury Villa

Sustainable Design at the Heart of Omana Luxury Villa

When owners Cobus and Silmara Scholtz set foot on Waiheke Island, their initial dream was to build a retreat for themselves.

Yet, when they realised the land’s true potential, their vision quickly transformed into the development of four luxury villas; Villa Serenity, Villa Haven, Villa Surrender and Villa Joy, built in harmony with the breathtaking landscape.

Omana Luxury Villas NZ_1200_600

Everyone involved in the project was hand-picked for their renowned quality and passion for working in harmony with nature. This ethos was ingrained in every aspect of the build, from the design, right down to protecting the furnishings with environmentally safe and non-toxic products.

Highly regarded New Zealand architect Pete Bossley was behind the design. His work exceeded the highest sustainability standards, using only environmentally certified materials, bought locally where possible.

The project also included the restoration of the surrounding Omana forest. Exotics, weeds and pests were cleared and a native planting program was developed to create a thriving environment for wildlife—one which has already brought the tuis back.

The same level of environmental consideration was also required for the interior.

With a flair for interior design, co-founder Silmara Scholtz selected bespoke pieces for each of the four luxury villas.

It was essential to protect each piece including rugs, chairs, headboards, daybeds and drapery from spills, mould, sun damage and of course wear and tear—especially in an environment where staying in is as much a part of the experience as venturing out.

Premium Surface Protection was chosen to treat all the chairs, rugs, daybeds, headboards and drapery, with MicroSeal and Fiber Protector, recommended for their effectiveness and environmentally safe, non-toxic properties.

Together, every decision the founders’ made illustrates their commitment to sustainability and ensures Omana Luxury Villa will continue to provide incredible experiences for its guests for a very long time to come.

The Fabric Behind Faradays Concept Store Experience

The Fabric Behind Faradays Concept Store Experience

This year saw the opening of Faradays—a luxury concept store that delivers an experience far beyond your usual retail expectations.

Premium Surface Protection house of the year_Canterbury_House

The vision founded by Edward and Constance von Dadelszen, was turned into bricks and mortar in collaboration with Cheshire Architects, after the success of their online e-commerce store.

It’s a place where you can browse through coveted iconic fashion brands such as Alexandre Vauthier, Loewe and Louboutin alongside New Zealand’s own designer labels. Then marvel at stunning homewares, fragrances and floristry, before (during or after) a glass of vintage champagne at the in-house bar.

The interior’s artistic use of light-coloured fabrics and soft furnishings set against reclaimed wood pillars and stone slab tables creates a tactile and enticing environment.

The stand-out design feature however, is the spotlit shelving set behind taught fabric, theatrically pulled open and secured with gold holdbacks, to stage showstopping shoes and handbags.

Other furnishings include curvaceous designer lounges, textured rugs and deep wall-to-wall upholstered seating embellished with plush cushions in the bar.

Why Wear and Tear Should Never get in the Way of Outstanding Interior Design

The colour pallet and features are all bold choices for a tactile retail store slash bar that encourages its clientele to interact and stay for a while.

Knowing this, Faradays brought in Premium Surface Protection (PSP) to fibre protect all the furnishings, including the stretched fabric backdrops.

MicroSeal and Fiber ProTector fabric protector was used to shield fabrics from daily foot traffic, spills, dust, dirt and fingerprints. FireDefender was also used in line with building regulation specifications. As a result, the integrity of every fibre has been preserved to ensure each piece continues to play its part in elevating the concept store experience.

This makes Faradays, a truly great example of why commercial wear and tear should never get in the way of innovative and outstanding interior design.

Both red wine and Café Patron have been easily absorbed by my MicroSeal Chamois Sponge, leaving no trace at all. And with some kind of wizardry (science according to Brad), WonderSpot Spray managed to vanish dried chilli oil from our pale grey couch—incredible.”

NZ Master Builders House of the Year 2022

PSP Keeps Furnishings in Winning Condition

One of the highlights of being in the fibre and textile protection industry is admiring the work of talented interior designers and architects first-hand.

This was certainly the case when we stepped inside the winning NZ Master Builders House of the Year 2022, to protect the furnishings within.

Premium Surface Protection house of the year_Canterbury_House

The category alone, New Home over 4 Million conveys the grandeur of this 924 sqm estate, with six bedrooms, four bathrooms, three living areas, a bar, a games room, an eight-car garage and a swimming pool complete with changing rooms.

It’s a house that will be lived into the full with its kitchen hub, quiet corners, and multiple dining and entertaining areas. Yet, it’s also one that will be arduous to keep pristine due to its sheer size and the constant activity within.

Premium Surface Protection house of the year_Canterbury_entrance
Premium Surface Protection house of the year_Canterbury_loungeroom

So how can they keep it looking immaculate?

Fortunately, we at Premium Surface Protection were able to prescribe the right protection for every room from floor to ceiling or, should we say rugs to drapes.

It was a notable reminder that we constantly see household furnishings that are overlooked when it comes to protection from daily wear and tear, entertaining, inevitable accidents and fire. So we’ve used this opportunity to compile a checklist of obvious and not-so-obvious items that all benefit from fibre protection including:

  • Leather dining chairs
  • Leather/fabric bar stools
  • Lounges
  • Armchairs
  • Wingback chairs
  • Footstools/poufs
  • Bed headboards
  • Carpets
  • Rugs
  • Cushions
  • Throws
  • Drapes and curtains
  • Outdoor lounges and chairs
  • Daybeds
  • Sunloungers
  • Hammocks
Our work in the Master Builders House of the Year 2022 is done for now, although we’re sure we’ll be back to provide our extended rug cleaning and carpet protection services. Until then, we’re proud of our contribution. It’s a great feeling to walk out the door knowing the owners and their future guests can now enjoy every aspect of their new space without the anxiety of who’s going to knock over that first red wine.
